What can we learn from Africa?

The native wisdom of Africa is, to my observation, a largely an unknown resource. One way to make these proverbs more available is by using an interactive, searchable web-based database. One is now available at http://www.silcam.org/folder020601/page.php# To date (July 20, 2009), I have posted 110 proverbs, and I still have many more to add. These are a periscope that you can use to look into a new world and see what matters to them.

The Finished Work

Mary and I have been working on getting ready for our trip on Tuesday, but today is a time of rest. We are hoping you are having a time of rest and Christian fellowship, too. This is not about achieving righteousness through legalism. It is about enjoying God and His myriad works of great excellence. We take time to let God's great work of creation become the object of your praise, as well as His work in presenting to us the unique Theanthropic Being, Jesus the Messiah, Lord of All. He finished his work on the cross, making satisfaction for our culpable and evil acts, and sat down on high at the right hand of the Father. He is governing in all matters, great and small, for the joy of the Father, his elect angels and the blood-washed church. We are right in celebrating that wonderful and also mysterious victory.

Camping in the Cameroonian rain forest




One of the real blessings God has given us is the Toyota Hilux 4X4 that we bought new in 1996. It has less than 100,000 km (60,000 miles) and is still running great. It has a 7ft box and a single cab. The curb weight is 3086 pounds and the authorized cargo is 3020 pounds. It has a lot of work to do when we add our slide in camper, loaded with food for the time we have budgeted. That is usually 3 to 5 weeks.
The camper is a substantially rebuilt Skamper with a 7-ft floor. When you raise the roof, there is ventillation from 3 sides.
Due to the heavy rainfall, we have to have another roof. If we are going to a place frequently, we make a shelter with poles and rapphia leaf thatch. Otherwise, I use plastic or tarp. This time, we are relying on the tarps that we have joined together. They will shed the water pretty well and keep us dry in the heaviest downpours.
We are also taking along our own solar panels. They don't give out very much power because of the heavy cloud cover and the high forest canopy that frequently throws shadows on the solar panels.

Meet the Badwe'e people as I know them!

How the Badwe'e people love their mother tongue! It defines them, giving them the ability to talk and reason about their environment and shared future. They love their past and their parents, who left them their wisdom in stories and proverbs. One of the words from the past that rings in the hearing of the Badwe'e people to this day draws upon their experience with one species of ant, twan. They always walk in lines and none of the ants ever gets lost. The proverb is "The first ant taught the last ant how to walk."

It was the first ant who taught the last ant how to walk.
The point is that the Badwe'e of today are safe and secure when they let their elders pass on wisdom from the past. The first ancestor, Edwe'e, is now long dead, but they believe they are learning his way of walking from all those who have been faithful to the ways of the past. As a result, they are always looking to see if a proverb from the past can be invoked to make it clear that the present change is needed and is somehow faithful to the traditions of the fathers. [OZM0029] There is no better way to motivate a Badwe'e than to say "Your tombs and mine!" Thinking about those who are gone makes one feel every powerful emotion and know one is fully alive and capable of undertaking the most arduous tasks. Joseph Azabor, shown at the right, called on SIL to begin working in his village in 1985. Once he even called on his SIL houseguest and coworker to contemplate their ancestors' tombs! These SIL researchers worked with the Badwe'e people to design an orthography and to take control of their future in a manner they themselves manage and direct. They know that it is no longer enough for them to speak their language; they must be able to read it and write it, too. They see that the there is no other way for the word to get out to the whole people-group apart from written communication. The Badwe'e have been forced by changes imposed on them to change many things about their ways. Their ancestors were forced to go 40 miles to the east in the 1920's to seek treatment for sleeping sickness, and now those communities have grown large with new generations of Badwe'e. These Badwe'e are linked to their clans to the west and have heard about their progress in becoming literate. Now they have called on their relatives in the west to bring them the new possibilities of expressing themselves through writing. They are now the students of Elanga Ferdinand, shown at the right, who is playing his part in training teachers for this eastern region, helping them to learn and use a new, simpler orthography. In addition, he has helped them to imagine, create and manage their own committees to oversee the ongoing development of their language community. Thanks to your support, this eastward extension of the Badwe'e literacy program will take place. They will become literate and more ready to correct the problems of their community, including unemployment, AIDS, hunger, and the competing demands of raising a family and protecting the fauna of their forest.
